If you are planning a trip to the Andaman Islands, get ready to enjoy some truly exciting water sports. The crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches, beautiful corals and clean environment together make Andaman the best place for activities like speed boat rides, snorkelling, swimming, scuba diving and underwater sea walking. These activities suit swimmers and non-swimmers, first-timers and experienced adventurers alike. Popular rides also include the banana ride, sofa ride and jet-ski ride. Below are the three activities you simply should not miss.
Scuba Diving
Scuba diving is one of the most famous water sports activities in the Andaman Islands. Most of the beaches here are gifted with breathtaking corals and vibrant underwater life. Thanks to the crystal-clear waters, even novice divers can get a clear view of corals and fish in shallow water near the shore - so even non-swimmers can experience the underwater world.
Diving for beginners is conducted mainly at North Bay, Havelock Island, Elephant Beach and Neil Island. A single half-hour dive typically costs around Rs. 3,500 per person. At the dive centre you will first fill out a form, then be briefed on safety procedures and underwater signals before heading out with one or two certified divers who assist and photograph you throughout. Carry a pen-drive or a phone with enough storage to take your underwater photographs home.
Underwater Sea Walk
The Underwater Sea Walk is one of a kind in India - it feels like walking on another planet. Imagine standing 10 metres below the sea, surrounded by colourful fish and vibrant coral, breathing normally the entire time.
During a sea walk you wear a helmet supplied with air from a surface compressor; the compressed air keeps water from rising above a certain level, letting you breathe normally while keeping your head completely dry. It's a safe activity - you can even wear glasses or makeup. Suitable for ages 7 to 70, it requires no swimming skills or heavy equipment, and you remain in a natural standing position throughout. Highly recommended for every Andaman holiday.
Snorkelling
Snorkelling is one of the most popular ways to admire Andaman's corals. All you need is a snorkel tube, a mask and basic swimming ability - and even that isn't essential, as trained guides assist you with a lifebuoy.
At North Bay, Jolly Buoy and Elephant Beach you'll find snorkelling guides who charge only Rs. 500 to Rs. 800 for half an hour, equipment included. The crystal-clear waters of the Andaman Islands offer some of the best underwater visibility anywhere in the world, letting you spot colourful reef fish such as clownfish (Nemo), phantom bannerfish and zebra fish.
