Located at Port Blair, the Cellular Jail stood mute witness to the tortures meted out to freedom fighters incarcerated here. Completed in 1906, it earned the name 'cellular' because it is made up entirely of individual cells for solitary confinement. Originally a seven-pronged, puce-coloured building with a central watchtower, only three of the seven prongs remain today. Now a National Memorial, it is a place of pilgrimage for freedom-loving visitors. The penal settlement established here after the First War of Independence in 1857 marked the beginning of the agonising story of India's freedom fighters, first at the Viper Island jail and later at the Cellular Jail.
