Ross Island served as the capital of the Andaman Islands from 1858 until 1941 and was the base for the British administrator of the Port Blair penal colony. In 1941 the Japanese converted the site into a POW camp and built war installations, remnants of which can still be seen. Today it lies deserted, with dilapidated but atmospheric colonial-era structures such as the Chief Commissioner's house and an Anglican church slowly being overgrown by nature.
